The purpose of Residents for Respectful Research (R3) is to ensure that low-wealth residents understand, have input on, and benefit from research conducted on/with members of their community . Our residents are concerned about how research data are gathered and used, and how their lives are represented.
Why does Residents for Respectful Research (R3) need to exist?
· Historically, low-wealth, Black and Brown bodies have been used for research that has at times been detrimental to their health, such as the Tuskegee Experiments, or has enriched others, like HeLa cells, which revolutionized research, but only recently have benefitted the family of Henrietta Lacks.
· Here in Charlottesville, Faculty and students at the University of Virginia frequently perform research impacting our community.
On January 23, 2010, the late Dr. Holly Edwards & R3 Steering Committee member Karen Waters spoke truth to power on this subject at the Paramount Theater on a panel with University Professor James Childress, director of the Institute for Practical Ethics and Public Life.

How does R3 work?
PHAR, with the support of the Equity Center has partnered with UVA’s Institutional Review Board for Social and Behavioral Science to create a community research review board comprised of CITI-trained low-wealth residents who review and approve protocols containing specific keywords in advance of IRB-SBS review. Additionally, they engage with researchers to provide opportunities to share their data and outcomes with the community, as well as provide insight into research questions relevant to their neighbors.
The purpose of Residents for Respectful Research (R3) is to assure that public housing residents understand, have input to, and benefit from research conducted on/with public housing residents – whether that is by senior faculty or students. There is widespread concern among public housing residents of how research data are used, and how their lives are represented. In addition to rarely receiving the benefits of research done in their communities, uncoordinated research places time burdens on residents. For example, many have to answer basic demographic, economic or health status questions whenever a project gets started.
