Development and Communications Manager (Part-Time)

Mission: To Educate and Empower Low-Income Residents to Protect and Improve Our Own Communities through Collective Action.  

Position Overview:

PHAR is seeking a dynamic and results-driven Development and Communications Manager to lead our fundraising and community engagement efforts on a part-time basis. This crucial role will drive our organization’s financial sustainability through strategic development initiatives and build meaningful connections with our supporters through compelling communications. The ideal candidate will possess a proven track record in fundraising, exceptional communication skills, and a passion for advancing PHAR’s mission. 

Key Responsibilities:

Development:

  • Develop and implement comprehensive fundraising strategies, including annual appeals, major gift cultivation, grant writing, and planned giving.
  • Identify, cultivate, and steward relationships with major donors, foundations, and corporate partners.
  • Manage grant research, proposal writing, and reporting, ensuring timely and accurate submissions.
  • Oversee donor database management and reporting, providing insights to inform fundraising strategies.
  • Plan and execute successful fundraising events, from conception to post-event follow-up, maximizing revenue and engagement.

Communications:

  • Develop and implement strategic communication plans to enhance brand awareness and engagement.
  • Create compelling content for various channels, including website, social media, email newsletters, and print materials.
  • Manage and grow our social media presence, fostering online community and engagement.
  • Develop and implement effective email marketing campaigns to cultivate relationships and drive action.
  • Build and maintain relationships with media outlets, managing media inquiries and securing positive coverage.

Qualifications:

  • Proven track record of success in fundraising, with demonstrated experience in major gift cultivation and grant writing.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling messages for diverse audiences.
  • Strong understanding of fundraising principles, best practices, and ethical standards.  
  • Proficiency in donor database management and CRM systems.
  • Experience with social media management, email marketing platforms, and website content management systems.
  • Strong organizational, project management, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.  
  • Passion for PHAR’s mission and a commitment to its values.

Compensation: $20-25 per hour, 20-25 hours per week.

Graduate Policy and Research Intern

Position Overview:

The Policy and Research Intern will play a valuable role in PHAR’s mission to improve the lives of public housing residents in Charlottesville. While serving as PHAR’s policy intern, individuals will explore policy issues impacting public housing residents, including housing, health, education, and social welfare policy initiatives at the local, state, and national levels. This intern will research and analyze housing and related policy issues, track ongoing legislation, and write about the implications of various policy initiatives on low income housing residents. The ideal candidate will have expertise on public policy, a passion for social and political justice, and an eagerness to participate in PHAR’s mission. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and track housing and other adjacent legislation
  • Report on ongoing policy issues during staff meetings
  • Research and analyze policy impacting Residents 
  • Comparatively analyze housing policy in Charlottesville with other localities, identifying best practices and areas for improvement.
  • Assist community organizers in educating residents on policy issues
  • Help develop and distribute informational materials to residents and the broader community

Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of social welfare policy
  • A current student at the Batten School of Public Policy at UVA in pursuit of a Master’s in Public Policy
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and research skills.  
  • A special interest in a policy related to Low Income Housing
  • Passion, integrity, and a commitment to PHAR’s mission.  

Position Details:

  • This is an unpaid internship opportunity. 
  • Work will be mostly in-person at the PHAR office with some hybrid, online work, or work in the community. 
  • The internship will occur each week Monday-Friday for approximately 11 weeks between May 21st and August 25th to account for holiday closures and PHAR office schedules. Flexibility with start/end dates and conflicts will be permitted.

Residents for Respectful Research (R3) Resident Reviewer

Residents for Respectful Research Overview

Residents for Respectful Research (R3) was established by PHAR in 2018. R3 is a community-led participant in the UVA Institutional Review Board (IRB) research screening process, as well as a stand-alone voice for community interests regarding research. The R3 works with the Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) IRB. The IRB screens research proposals intended for publication and issues determinations on whether or not research can proceed. The IRBs refer proposals to R3 that may target public and subsidized housing communities. The primary function of R3 is to ensure that research does not exploit low-wealth Charlottesville residents and instead encourages research that benefits the community.

Residents for Respectful Research Reviewer Position Overview

An R3 Reviewer:

  • Is a resident of a public or subsidized housing community.
  • Reads, reviews, and makes decisions about research proposals that are referred to R3 by the IRBs.
  • Will complete training to prepare to review research proposals.
  • Will receive guidance and support from the R3 Coordinator and R3 Steering Committee.

R3 Reviewer Qualifications

  • Demonstrated direct knowledge and experience with life in public or subsidized housing.
  • Demonstrated commitment to PHAR vision, mission and goals.
  • Successful service in a leadership role or a demonstrated capacity for leadership.
  • Ability to read and analyze documents, with assistance from the R3 Steering Committee or R3 Coordinator.
  • Ability to provide constructive, critical feedback in verbal and/or written form.

This position requires reading and evaluating research proposals submitted to UVA’s Institutional Review Board for Social and Behavioral Sciences. You will receive training from PHAR and support from our team during the review process. We will equip you to evaluate and critique research proposals that affect residents and you will receive support from our team during the review process. No prior experience is needed.

Salary: R3 Reviewers are part-time, non-exempt, temporary employees of PHAR, supervised by the R3 Coordinator. R3 Reviewers are paid $15 an hour, for up to 10 hours a week.
