The Charlottesville Public Housing Association of Residents (PHAR) is currently hiring an Executive Director.
Executive Director’s Role: Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for PHAR staff, programs, expansion, and execution of its mission of educating and empowering public housing residents to work collectively to improve their communities. The Executive Director will develop deep knowledge of community organizing, leadership development and resident-involved redevelopment, and will implement PHAR programs, supervise staff, and raise/oversee funds, ultimately ensuring improvements to public housing residents’ quality of life.
Specific Responsibilities
Leadership & Management:
- Ensure ongoing programmatic excellence, rigorous program evaluation, and consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications, and programs; recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve strategic plan goals.
- Coordinate and oversee hiring and retention of staff to ensure a competent and responsive staff.
- Actively engage and energize PHAR volunteers, board members, Advisory Council members and funders.
- Support the strong functioning of the PHAR Board of Directors, including implementation of strategic planning and facilitating informed decision-making.
- Ensure effective systems to track progress, and regularly evaluate PHAR’s work, documenting successes and effectively communicating with a variety of constituents.
- Represent PHAR at City of Charlottesville, Charlottesville Redevelopment and Housing Authority (CRHA) and other entities including facilitation of monthly PMT (Project Management Team) meetings with the City and CRHA.
- Provide coaching and supervision for staff.
Fundraising & Communications:
- Oversee grass-roots fundraising campaigns.
- Develop and submit grant proposals for government and foundation funding.
- Deepen and refine all aspects of communications, from web presence to external relations, with the goal of strengthening the recognition of PHAR’s important work.
- Build external relationships with community members, non-profits, and relevant governmental entities to garner new opportunities for organizational growth.
Qualifications
The ED must be thoroughly committed to PHAR’s mission. All candidates should have proven leadership and relationship-management experience, strong communication and collaboration skills, and the capacity for generating and managing funds. Training will be provided as needed. Residency in the Charlottesville area is required. Knowledge and experience with Charlottesville’s low-income community is strongly preferred.
